Go off the beaten path and into Alaska’s rugged wilderness on a five-mile bicycle ride through the Taiya River Valley past native wildlife and the ruins of Dyea, an abandoned gold rush town. After meeting your expert rider guide and being fitted for your bicycle, you’ll set out on two wheels along dirt trails through a temperate rainforest surrounded by steep mountains. As you venture deeper into the pristine and secluded Taiya River Valley you’ll cycle along coastal tidal flats and perhaps catch a glimpse of local wildlife. Salmon, bald eagles, caribou and bears are all known to roam about these parts. Pedal your way to the settlement of Dyea, once a boomtown during the Klondike Gold Rush where prospectors used Chilkoot Pass to explore the gold fields of the Yukon. The remaining scraps of lumber and metal, cemeteries and wharf are now considered a U.S. National Historic Landmark. At the end of the ride, you’ll head back to port by van with a better understanding of Alaska’s mining heritage and natural splendors.
