Travel through Grenada's capital, St. George's, a quaint town of red-tiled roofs, white houses, and lush green foliage, on the way to the Laura's Herb and Spice Garden. Walk along paths lined with nutmeg shells and breathe in the spice-scented air as your knowledgeable guide explains which spices are grown in the garden, which have medicinal properties, and which are exported for use in not only in patent medicines but also in international cuisine. Marvel at names such as Shado Beni and Jump Up and Kiss Me (medicinal plants) as well as the more traditional cocoa, nutmeg, mace, pimento, cinnamon, vanilla, tumeric, and cloves. Then drive south to Grenada Distillers Limited, the island's best-known and largest distillery, in operation since 1937. The ancient factory now produces exotic blends and other products from sugarcane, including three award-winning rums and 15 other products. On arrival, be greeted by your expert guide, who will explain the distillery's history and describe the rum-making process. Then proceed to the Barrel House, where you'll be able to sample and purchase these fine spirits or other products, including molasses. Next, make your way to sparkling Grand Anse Beach and spend an hour strolling the sands, taking a dip in the crystal-clear water or simply basking in the golden sun.
