Enjoy rolling countryside, babbling brooks and brightly painted houses en route to Kinsale, one of Ireland's oldest (its charter was granted in 1333) and most picturesque towns. On the way, stop for a photo opportunity at the historic Charles Fort, built in the classic star shape in the 17th century and actively used until 1922. The staunch fort guarded Kinsale Harbor and was involved in many of Ireland's most important battles. Once an important naval base (it was here that some of the bodies from the RMS Lusitania were brought in 1915), Kinsale is now a popular destination for yacht pilots, who prize its long waterfront and sheltered harbor. Because of its protected location, rich farmlands and ready access to trade routes, Kinsale has been a population center for centuries. Many buildings from the 18th century remain, and you will have a chance to view them as you independently stroll around the village. This lovely town has been called the Gourmet Capital of Ireland for its welcoming restaurants, cafes, and pubs. On the return to port, continue your trip along the River Bandon, past castle ruins and across the River Lee. It's a drive you'll never forget.
