Ride the wave of Europe’s flourishing microbrewery scene on a tasting “tour” of some of the region’s finest craft beers. Take a seat in one of Bilbao’s popular modern bars, where you’ll learn about the brewing process, plus savor classic pintxos (Basque for tapas) with every sip. On your way, enjoy a panoramic drive through the center of Bilbao, a town founded by the Romans, which now serves as the industrial and financial capital of Basque Country. See the layers of history in the architecture as you make your way to the Ensanche, part of the city developed during the Industrial Revolution. You'll stop at a popular local bar, a quick walk away from the world-renowned Guggenheim Museum. While there, uncover the secrets of the brewing process and characteristics of different beer types, plus learn of the ingredients used to create the beer you are about to taste. Also learn of the history of beer in the area and some of the burgeoning microbreweries of the Basque Country’s new craft beer movement. Then see — or rather taste — for yourself what the excitement is all about. Try a variety of craft beers, paired with delicious, artfully prepared bar snacks. After, your tour continues with a guided visit of the Ensanche. Note how the streets follow a grid pattern designed by planners more than a century ago. Admire the baroque-style city hall and opera house, both built in the 1890s. In sharp contrast is the glorious Guggenheim Museum, a golden feast of modern splendor along the river. One of the most admired works of contemporary architecture in the world, the structure is a magnificent blend of canopies, ship shapes, towers and even fish fins — a true sight to behold. You’ll have the opportunity to take plenty of photos outside. Near the end of your tour, you’ll also have nearly an hour on your own to explore the area further before heading back.
