Experience the consistent and stunning Alaskan views from both land and water on your journey to the awe-inspiring Mendenhall Glacier. Mendenhall Lake is a treasure trove of natural beauty that rests in front of the glacier. Your guide will outfit you with gear, orient you to your canoe and provide a safety briefing before you paddle toward the Mendenhall Glacier. Glide between the towering cliffs and keep an eye out for some of Alaska’s amazing wildlife from gulls and terns nesting along cliffs to mountain goats, bald eagles, black bears, and other inhabitants of this natural landscape. As you paddle across Mendenhall Lake, you’ll pass floating blue-hued icebergs and the powerful Nugget Falls waterfall cascading down the mountainside. When you reach land, trade your paddling gear for backpacks and trekking poles and begin the hike over the rocky terrain carved out by the glacier, while absorbing the beauty of the beautiful 13-mile-long river of ice. You will get an up-close and intimate perspective of the glacier, while your guide will inform you of how the changing climate has caused the glacier to retreat and show the recession path through time.
