Embark on a scenic drive (approximately 30 minutes each way) along the coast out to the Fortress of the Bear, a three-quarter acre habitat located about five miles from the town center, set against the Tongass National Forest. Upon arrival, meet with a naturalist guide who educates you on the center, the history of the resident bears, and how they live their day-to-day lives. Then, observe the black and brown bears and their unique personalities in their natural habitat from the covered, elevated viewing platform, or catch a glimpse from the indoor balcony windows or ground-level windows. After your visit, your drive brings you back into Sitka, where you can either be dropped off downtown to explore the sights and shops and return to the ship at your leisure via the free shuttle, or you can opt to return to the ship straight away.
