Your adventure in Visby, a UNESCO World Heritage site, begins in Almedalen, a park near the harbor, beautifully planted with oaks. Wander along the city's protective walls to the Visby Botanical Gardens to see tulip and fig trees, and scores of colorful flowers. Continue your walk through the medieval walled city, gazing at picturesque homes flanked by beautiful roses, and proceed to St. Mary's Cathedral. Enter the massive stone structure with its outstanding carvings and pause to see sunlight streaming through its glorious stained-glass windows. Finally, visit the nearby Gotlands Fornsal Museum, which offers a look at the island's art, history, and heritage. Founded in 1875, the museum comprises a number of buildings and farms — some bequeathed to the museum by late residents of the town — and welcomes more than 350,000 visitors each year.
