Molde is the administrative center of County Romsdal. Protected from the harsh north winds, the city lies at the foot of the hills, facing a fjord which opens out on to a magnificent panorama of 87 snow-capped peaks. Molde is often called "The Town of Roses," although travelers from warmer climates are often less than impressed with the count of roses here until they grasp that actually these beautiful flowers should not be growing in this climate at all, let alone reasonably in moderate profusion. You will visit three of the highlights of Molde. The Romsdal Museum is one of the largest provincial museums in Norway, and comprises more than 40 buildings illustrating social and architectural development from the Viking era right up to the end of the 19th century. A local folkdance group consisting of children and youngsters in colorful national costume will perform during your visit. At the Molde Church you will find a simple white interior decorated by some of Norway's leading artists. Then, head to the Varden Viewpoint some 1200 feet above the town. It offers panoramic views of the fjord and the stunning Romsdal Mountains.
