Your adventure begins with a scenic drive to Epidaurus through beautiful vineyards and age-old groves. Upon arrival, admire the ruins of a once-prominent town and discover the Theatre of Epidaurus, said to date back to the 3rd century B.C., and considered the best-preserved ancient theater in Greece. Wander the theatre, that in its day could hold 12,000 guests, and see the foundations of the temple of Asclepius, the guest house, the tholos, the sleeping porch, the temples of Artemis and Themis, and the gymnasium. Linger over a traditional Greek lunch. Then, continue along the Argive Plain to visit the site of ancient Mycenae. Although excavations had begun here in 1841, it wasn't until 33 years later that a self-styled archaeologist, Heinrich Schliemann, unearthed Mycenae's treasures. Enter the site via a walkway, lined by impenetrable cyclopean walls, through the Lions Gate. According to Greek legend, this is where Clytemnestra received her husband, Agamemnon, on his return from Troy. Once inside the gate, explore the Royal Palace, the shaft graves and the remains of the city walls. Pondering what you've seen, re-board your coach for the return journey to the ship.
