Begin your full-day guided tour of Kyoto's most visited sights. On a drive through the city, you'll see Kyoto Tower, Kyoto Station, and Nijo castle. Stop for a photo op at Toji (East) temple, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that is as revered for its historical significance as it is for its beautiful five-story pagoda. It was founded in 796, just after Kyoto became the imperial capital, and was built to protect the city from negative spiritual energy. The five-story pagoda is 187 feet high, making it the tallest wooden pagoda in Japan. Pause for a relaxing Western-style restaurant lunch before visiting the Kyoto Handicraft Center. Here, you'll have an opportunity to learn about traditional Japanese crafts such as origami and calligraphy, and purchase some souvenirs. As a final stop, you'll visit Kinkakuji Temple (Golden Pavilion), one of the city's most famous places. The three-story temple with its gold leaf-covered top stories is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, spectacularly set overlooking a large pond that has a mini two-tree island at its middle.
