Destination Highlight: Anaga Mountains and La Laguna

Departing from the port in Santa Cruz de Tenerife towards the Anaga Mountains you will pass by San Andrés and the famous Playa de las Teresitas. Then the serpentine roads leads you first uphill and then downhill to Taganana - a beautiful little village, in the bottom of a deep-carved valley, which maintains the charm of the traditional Canarian rural architecture, and which is one of the oldest villages of Tenerife, very well known by its agriculture on terraces. Here you find the small church of “Las Nieves” with its Flemish triptych and have the opportunity to visit the small square in the village. You will be able to enjoy some typical appetizers in a local restaurant before driving pass by “Pico del Inglés”, from where you have beautiful perspectives of the North and South side of the island and from which Gran Canaria is frequently seen. Population is scarce in this harsh region but the road that runs northwards is a constant vision of stunning views over the island, pushing its way towards the Monte de Las Mercedes, a dense forest of laurel trees and one of the island’s most idyllic spots. Geographically, this is a reminder of the primitive woodlands, which once stretched up and around the Mediterranean seaboard, reaching as far as Asia. On the way back to the ship you will make a short stop in La Laguna that is the second important town of the island with great cultural interest and from there you will reach the harbour.

Excursions

Small Group: The Rock of Gibraltar

Rock of Gibraltar, about 1400 feet above sea level, a legendary pillar of Hercules with its pubs and pillar boxes, overlooking the Mediterranean. This tour covers the main sights and includes time for shopping on Main Street, the hub of the Duty Free Port. From the quayside we drive toward the British/Spanish Frontier near the airfield runway, then to Europa Point and the Trinity Lighthouse—the only Trinity Lighthouse outside Great Britain. Here you alight to photograph panoramic views of the busy shipping lane where the Mediterranean meets the Atlantic and two continents. We then visit the Upper Rock to St. Michael’s Cave, famed for its stalagmites and stalactites and a Gothic chamber where classical music echoes; the cave has a £2 million upgrade and a light and sound show called “the awakening.” The Rock Apes roam near King Charles V Wall; they are friendly but must not be touched. Continuing through the Upper Rock we exit the Nature Reserve past Moorish Castle and the Tower of Homage. Finally we reach the Upper Town, driving down the winding streets to Main Street. At passenger request, the tour can return to the vessel or drop you in town to shop; if dropped in town, you are responsible for returning to the vessel.
