Visby is an outstanding example of a Northern European walled Hanseatic town, that in a unique way has preserved its townscape and its valuable buildings. The town wall, dating back to the 13th century is almost 3.5 kms long, 10-11 meters in height and encircles the old stone houses, churches and street system. During the middle ages Visby was an important seat of the emerging Hansa, a trade monopoly federation of mainly German cities, that from the mid- 12th to the mid- 17th century formed a joint-trade in the North of Europe and the Baltic Sea. Drive along the eastern side of the wall, where you can get a glimpse of the roof tops of Visby and the great St Mary’s Cathedral, built in the beginning of the 13th century during the late 12th to early 14th centuries. Continue along the sea, pass Visby Hospital where the patients can enjoy the beautiful view over the sea, until you reach Galgberget, Gallows Hill, a high lime-stone cliff on the outskirts of Visby. Make a short stop at Almedalen, the former medieval harbor, today the site for the famous Political Week that takes place here a week in July every year gathering the whole elite of Swedish politicians. Board your coach, which first will take you to the former medieval harbor, Almedalen. Today a park with great views if the medieval town-walls, houses, and church ruins that stretches skyways. It is also the site for the famous Political Week that takes place here a week in July every year gathering the whole elite of Swedish politicians. Walk towards Visby´s oldest building, the Powder Tower, dating from the 11th century and continue through the Fisherman’s gate to the Botanical Gardens, with many rare plants and famous for the many various kinds of roses. Just a short peak inside before your re-board your coach and travel along the outside of the wall to an area just north of Visby town, called Galgberget. Galgberget is a high lime-stone cliff with a beautiful view of the ocean and the outskirts of Visby. and at the end of the cliff you can see 3 stone-pillars standing in a circle which are the remaining ruins of a “gallows”. These gallows are Northern Europe´s only remains of a gallows, which in earlier times were used for executions. Return to Visby. Walk across the moat, surrounding the medieval town-wall for about 3,5 km, but that has never been filled with water. Continue through the Dalmans Gate and walk through the cozy alleyways passing picturesque old houses flanked by flowers, to the great viewpoint right above the St Mary’s Cathedral. Enjoy the magnificent view across the sea, over old houses and rooftops and not the least over the Cathedral, built by German merchants at the end of the 11th century during the late 12th to early 14th centuries, and still in use. This is probably the place to take some of your best photos! Return to your coach through one of the old gates. Tour ends pierside.

Leave Copenhagen and drive north along the coastal road, passing through a number of fashionable and exclusive residential areas where you will pass Hvidøre Palace, once a noble residence and now it serves as a conference center for Novo Nordisk Pharmaceutical, before driving through the outskirts of the Deer Park. Having passed through a number of small villages and popular resorts, you arrive in Helsingør, where an outside visit is paid to Kronborg Castle. Built in the late 16th century by King Frederik II, Kronborg has achieved worldwide fame as the setting for the dramatic masterpiece by William Shakespeare, ''Hamlet - Prince of Denmark''. After Kronborg, you will walk to The Culture Yard, an old shipyard now transformed to a culture center with concert spaces, theatre stages and a library. Here you will enjoy a traditional Danish meal of open-faced sandwiches. After/before dinner you will see Fredensborg Palace: built on the initiative of King Frederik IV, the palace has an Italianate architecture and is the spring and autumn residence of the Danish Royal Family. Continue a short way to Hillerød, where a visit is paid to Frederiksborg Castle. One of the finest examples of Renaissance architecture in northern Europe, Frederiksborg Castle was built by order of King Christian IV and now houses the Museum of National History, a collection of priceless Danish paintings, porcelain, silverware, tapestries and furniture. The tour returns to Copenhagen, passing through small rural communities and agricultural and forested countryside, arriving back at the pier.

We travel north on Gotland to reach Fårösund, where we have to catch the small ferry to cross over the bay to Fårö. The ferry ride takes only 7-8 minutes, but in summertime there is a long waiting line of cars and buses who all want to go over, so the wait can be long sometimes. Fårö Island is where the famous film director Ingmar Bergman filmed 4 of his movies as well as two documentaries. He made his home at Fårö, and his grave is at Fårö Churchyard. You will hear the story of how Ingmar Bergman came to, and lived on Fårö. The rauk field on Fårö is the main attraction, you cannot visit the island and not see these beautiful stone sculptures, made by the sea over thousands of years. Lunch will be served at a local restaurant. After taking the ferry back to the Gotlandic mainland we have a scenic drive back to Visby. The tour finishes with a guided scenic drive back to pier in Visby.

Many German merchants were settled in Visby during this time. Passing the “Big Square” and the main street and hear about the great history of Visby as a trade city before walking through the Fisherman’s gate to the calm and relaxing Botanical Garden famous for the many various kinds of roses and rare and exotic trees and plants that can exist thanks to the mild climate of Gotland. End your walk at Almedalen, the former medieval harbor, today the site for the famous Political Week that takes place here a week in July every year gathering the whole elite of Swedish politicians.
