After your time at the Seahorse Trolley museum, continue to dock square, located in the heart of Kennebunkport, where you’ll have a short amount of free time for exploration, shopping and maybe even a snack. Departing the pier, drive through historic Portland passing by the Eastern Promenade offering a panoramic view of Casco Bay, the Portland Observatory, the new arts district, as well as the thriving commercial and business districts. Visit Bug Light, a steel structure lined with brick, that was first lighted in 1875 as an aid to navigation for this busy port. In addition, enjoy the Liberty Ship Memorial dedicated to the 266 ships built on the site during WWII. Commonly known as American ugly ducklings, these vessels were the workhorses of the WWII fleet, carrying cargoes of grain and mail, ore and ammo, trucks and troops in the fabled horizon-filling convoys. Then it’s a short jaunt to visit the Spring Point Ledge Lighthouse, a typical sparkplug-style lighthouse constructed of brick on a cylindrical cast-iron caisson. Many vessels ran aground on this dangerous ledge before requests from seven steamship companies in 1891 convinced the government to build a lighthouse. Visit Portland Head Light travel along Cape Elizabeth’s rocky coast to Fort Williams, once a military outpost for coastal defense and now home of Maine’s oldest lighthouse. First illuminated on January 10, 1791, Portland Head Light has since stood at the gateway to Portland Harbor for mariners traveling Maine’s perilous coast. Here you’ll have ample time to explore the grounds and visit the impressive museum located in the former lighthouse keeper’s quarters. The museum chronicles the history of the Portland Head Light and Fort Williams through permanent exhibits displaying original artifacts and documents, navigational aids, lenses, video displays, models and photography.

Working Waterfront & Lobster Pull

Nestled in the Old Port district of Portland is the bustling working waterfront where lobstermen off load their catch from Casco Bay and seafood shops offer the freshest delicacies from the sea. Discover the inner workings of the area with a voyage on a lobster boat followed by walking tour through the cobbled streets of the area exploring the numerous marine related businesses. From the pier a short walk brings you to the waterfront departure point of your lobster boat. Following a short safety briefing depart into Casco Bay to pull live traps. During the voyage discover how lobsters get from the bottom of the ocean to your dinner plate and learn about their habits, conservation efforts and the difference between hard-shells, shedders, shorts, culls and keepers. A see-thru “live tank” allows you to watch the catch until the end of the day when are released back into the sea. Upon return to the pier begin a walking tour of the Old Port area. Your guide carves a path through the streets of the charming area which a hundred years ago was home to fish houses, canneries, industrial factories and textile mills. Today the brick warehouses hold numerous fresh seafood shops, coffee houses, bakeries, and award-winning restaurants. Explore the history of the area as your leader offers insight into history and lore of the old waterfront. You stroll concludes at the pier where you may reboard your ship.
