Destination Highlight: Bird Safari By Boat

Gjesvær is one of the three small fishing villages on the island. We start our tour by bus in Honningsvåg and pass by fish industry factories, hotels, as well as the airstrip before we start climbing to the plateau with its barren nature. There are no trees on the island, but astonishingly many different plants. In the summer months some 4.-5.000 reindeer graze here and with a bit of luck we may see some of them! The animals are domesticated and belong to the Sami people, a minority group in Norway. 10 % of them still live a nomadic life. Soon we turn off to the left towards Gjesvær. The village is situated 37 km to the west of Honningsvåg. It has a protected harbour with some 100 islands, small and bigger, off the coast, among these the so called “Stappan. We climb in the boat that is to take us out near the islands where nature and birdlife is under protection, i.e. we are only allowed to approach to a certain distance. The island group is situated 15 km west of the North Cape cliff and here a wide variety of seabirds are nesting, such as Black-legged Kittiwake, Puffin, Razor-Bill, Common Guillemot, Great Cormorant, European Shag, Northern Gannets. Also the sea-eagle is often to be seen. After approx. 1 hr 30 min, we return to the village Gjesvær to take the bus back to the landing stage in Honningsvåg.

Destination Highlight: Briksdal Glacier

The village of Olden is situated at the end of the innermost arm of the lovely Nordfjord, which cuts its way into the county of "Sogn & Fjordane" for almost 110 kilometers to the mighty ice fields of the Jostedal Glacier - the largest glacier in mainland Europe. Steep mountains tower both sides of the valley making the village of Olden one of the most charming and idyllic in Western Norway. Olden's main income comes from farming and tourism, and the Briksdal Glacier is one of the most visited glaciers in Norway during the summer months. Starting from the village center we pass the old church dating back to 1759. The red painted church a bit further up the valley dates back to the 1930’ies and was a gift from the American Mr. Singer who settled in the village. He collected art and furniture and his home is today a museum. We continue along the shore of the small Floen Lake, then along the long and narrow Olden Lake, one of Norway’s most beautiful lakes, to Rustøen at the far end where colorful farms cover the wide fertile upper valley. On both sides numerous waterfalls descend from the ice field, and in front of us we see the long white tongue of the Melkevoll Glacier. The road ascends through woodlands to the Briksdal Inn at the end of the road. The track crosses the river and climbs in zigzags above the fall to the top where one will enjoy the fantastic view of this arm of the Jostedals Glacier. As we reach the Briksdal Glacier it is all the various colors in the ice that is amazing, i.e. the many shades of blue and turquoise. Sometimes the glacier "calves", sounding like thunder, and we urge you to respect the warning signs put up near the glacier for the sake of visitors' security. After the visit to the glacier we walk back the same road to Briksdal Inn where a refreshment break is made Here you will also find an extensive souvenir shop. The return is via the same road back to Olden.

Destination Highlight: Leisurely Haugesund

The area of Haugesund as a settlement dates back to at least 1217, when it was mentioned in the Norse Sagas. However, it wasn’t until 1854 that town rights were awarded by King Oscar I of Sweden and Norway. Today the town has a population of approximately 38,000 and is the natural ‘capital’ of the region, situated between the Boknafjord, north of Stavanger and south of the Hardangerfjord. Haugesund is inseparably linked to the sea and owes its prosperity to the successful herring industry, which thrived throughout the 19th century. Drive through the central parts of the town, past the pastel pink Town Hall, built in 1931 as a gift from a local ship owner and his wife. Continue towards ‘Haraldshaugen’, raised in 1872 as a national monument commemorating The Battle of Hafrsfjord where King Harald Fairhair won over the chieftains of 29 historic counties and gathered Norway into one kingdom. The monument is believed to be the site where King Harald Fairhair is buried. Proceed towards the Steinsfjellet viewpoint, a well-loved area of the locals and known as a picturesque starting point for nature walks and hikes. The viewpoint lies 227 metres above sea level, with impressive panoramic views of Haugesund and the surrounding areas.

You will visit three of the highlights of Molde. The Romsdal Museum is one of the largest provincial museums in Norway, and comprises more than 40 buildings illustrating social and architectural development from the Viking era right up to the end of the 19th century. Ultimate Nordfjord: Authentic Farm Tastes & Timeless Traditions

"A comfortable bus will take you from the port to a beautiful landscape surrounded by mountains and fjords. After about 1 hour drive, you will reach a small, authentic Norwegian village that is off the beaten path and a real treasure. The village of Sandane offers you a real experience of the Norwegian countryside. Your first stop is at Nordfjord Folkemuseum where you will have a guided tour in the open-air-museum and will visit the newest exhibition, Attåt. Where the open-air museum shows the pre-industrial farming community and life on the farm, this exhibition will focus on various industries that we have had here in Nordfjord. This tour will let you discover how Nordfjord building traditions have developed in the last 500 years. By visiting the historical buildings in our open-air museum, you can get a feel for the evolution from small timber dwellings to modern multi-story buildings with covered chimneys. Your next stop for today is the historic Gloppen Hotel whose traditions go back to 1866. Here you will savour the 2-course lunch from local producers, most of them less than 3 to 10 km away from the hotel, and taste three kinds of ""Gloppen brew"" beer. After being a guest at the Gloppen hotel, you will understand that there is something very special about local food from the Nordfjord - the food is from the village, fresh, clean and without additives.Your next stop is at Påldtun Fruit Farm. The host of the farm will tell you the history of the farm “Before and now” and ensure you have a magical farm experience! You will have a chance to taste the products of the farm: lemonade juice, fruit juice and a local "pancake" called Svele that is very good together with the jam and jelly. Before leaving the beautiful Sandane region, visit Vereide Church, the oldest church in the region built in 1162, and immerse yourself in a charming music experience from the organ played by the church current cantor, Dorothee Raschwitz. Drive back to Olden with a photostop at the Skjørbakkane viewpoint.
