By far, the aqueduct’s most striking feature is the network of 14 arches that cross over the Alcântara Valley, the tallest of which rise to a spectacular 213 feet (65 meters) from the ground, with a span of 95 feet (29 meters). From this reservoir, water was gravity-fed without interruption to the various fountains around the city through a system of five principal galleries. The Loreto Gallery formed part of the system and provided water to several major fountains of Lisbon. An underground passage will lead you to a beautiful belvedere in S. Pedro de Alcântara.
